WAYPOINT CENTRE FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE

The community is invited to Waypoint’s Annual Report to the Community on June 11 at 1:30 p.m. to hear Canada’s first dual astronaut, aquanaut and leadership expert Dr. Dave Williams speak.
Drawing from his book Defying Limits: Lessons from the Edge of the Universe, Dr. Williams will share the events that have defined his life.
He shows us that whether we’re gravity-defying astronauts or earth-bound terrestrials, we can all live an infinite, fulfilled life by relishing the value and importance of each moment.
“Waypoint’s Annual Report to the Community is an opportunity for us to open our doors and share a message of compassion and respect for those living with mental illness,” says Board Chair John Barrett-Hamilton.
“As a former healthcare CEO, Dr. Williams has a history of engraining patient-centred care in the fabric of the organization’s he’s worked with, an important part of our work at Waypoint.”
Before entering the Canadian Space Agency’s program, Dr. Williams worked as an emergency room doctor and later as director of emergency services at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
He joined an exclusive club when he blasted into space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, and again on Shuttle Endeavour where he walked out into the great beyond.
Having also lived and worked in the world’s only underwater ocean laboratory, he became Canada’s first dual astronaut and aquanaut.
He has most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Southlake Regional Health Centre.
The hospital’s annual meeting is also an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments of the past year and offer a heartfelt thank you to staff and volunteers, as well as the many partners, donors and community members dedicated to reducing stigma associated with mental illness and improving treatment and care. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Doors open at 1 p.m. with presentations beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Waypoint, 500 Church St., Penetanguishene.
