Here come the dogs — all 500 of them!

From Aug. 15-18, 2019, the town of Innisfil welcomes Canada’s largest dog agility competition.

The sport of dog agility features a dog-and-handler team navigating a sequence of obstacles in a prescribed order. It is an exciting race against time, with the fastest team to complete the sequence with the fewest mistakes winning the event.

More than 500 teams from across Canada will be coming to the Innisful Recreation Complex (7315 Yonge St., Innisfil) this week to compete and find out who is the National Champion this year.

The history of dog agility can be traced back to the late 1970s when the Crufts dog show sought entertainment during the intermission of their famous conformation event.

Several dogs were trained to run through a course that resembled horse jumping, showcasing their speed and athleticism. The audience was wildly entertained, and the sport of agility was born.

Since then agility has expanded to almost every country in the world where it is enjoyed by handlers and dogs of all ages, breeds and abilities.

The 2019 AAC National Championships is the highest level of agility competition in Canada. Comparable to the Olympics in prestige, handlers and their dogs train all year long for the honour of showcasing their skills as they vie for the title of National Agility Champion.

Spectators are welcome to this family-friendly event. Bring a lawn chair and come watch the dogs as they race through tunnels, leap over jumps, weave through a slalom of poles and prove that the best athletes have four legs!

Bring home something special for your own dog, or start your holiday shopping early with a selection of 40 vendors onsite each day.

This year the 2019 AAC National Championships is hosted by the Red Barn Event Centre. As Barrie’s largest dog training facility, classes are scheduled seven days each week for family dogs and those interested in pursuing competitive goals.
