Try a new activity or reconnect with your passion for fishing this week.

It's Family Fishing Week in Ontario until July 10. That means you can try your luck on the lake or river without a fishing licence.

If you don't have the equipment, TackleShare is run by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and offers free loans rods and reels. Locally, the Orillia Public Library offers the program. You have to call ahead to check on availability. Find other locations here.

There are still rules for people making use of the free fishing period.

You must:

  • follow conservation licence catch limits
  • obey size limits and sanctuaries
  • follow the fishing regulations
  • carry a permit of government-issued ID showing your name and date of birth

Details on conservation catch limits and other regulations that must be followed are available here.
