Ceremony held at cenotaph to mark 75th anniversary of D-Day

Students from Orillia Secondary School participated in massive ceremony in France

The 75th anniversary of D-Day is being recognized around the world today.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other world leaders gathered today at Juno Beach in Courseulles-Sur-Mer, France.

A group of students from Orillia Secondary School were also on hand for the ceremony.

There was also a ceremony closer to home. Today, Branch 34 of Orillia's Royal Canadian Legion held a brief outdoor service at the cenotaph outside Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.

About 30 people were on hand for the event, which included the laying of a wreath in memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice that day.

On June 6, 1944, during the Second World War, the Allies invaded Normandy in the largest sea-borne invasion in history. Canada was a major force as about 14,000 Canadian troops landed at Juno Beach.

The Battle of Normany was a pivotal event of the Second World War. Many say it was a battle that proved Canada's mettle and helped forged a national identity.
