CFUW marks impressive milestone with new history booklet

Despite challenges presented by COVID-19, CFUW will still present $15,000 in scholarships this year to deserving local female students

This year, the CFUW (Canadian Federation of University Women) Orillia is proudly celebrating its 65th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, the club has produced an interesting and very comprehensive history booklet containing photos and information on the many projects and activities undertaken over the years.

Beginning in 1955, CFUW Orillia consisted of 37 women and has grown to over 100 members. It continues with the same founding principles of advocacy to raise the social, economic, and legal status of women as well as to improve education, the environment, peace, justice, and human rights.

Originally the club was open only to women with university degrees or the equivalent but has for some time welcomed all women who believe in the goals of CFUW and value lifelong learning.

Despite having to face all the challenges that COVID-19 has presented, CFUW Orillia has shown its resilience, adaptability and creativity. Although physical meetings and some groups have had to be postponed, the members have continued to connect and work on various ongoing projects.

CFUW Orillia has consistently presented scholarships to deserving young women pursuing post-secondary education and this year will be no different as $15,000 will be awarded despite the necessary cancellation of the major fundraiser, the very popular Annual Homes Tour.

Many interest groups such as book club, golf, current event discussions, hiking, and bridge have continued to thrive because members have learned new technologies such as Zoom and various online platforms, other online apps, and have been able to social distance outside for some activities.

The members of CFUW Orillia look positively towards the future and will strive to continue the work and the fellowship for many years to come.
