The Ukrainian flag will fly in Orillia as the city officially proclaims its support for the besieged European nation.

During Monday’s council meeting, Mayor Steve Clarke read the proclamation, which acknowledged the Russian invasion of Ukraine has displaced millions of citizens, leading to 1.5 million refugees fleeing to other countries.

“Russia shows no signs of retreating and continues a systematic attack on innocent civilians and critical infrastructure,” Clarke said.

The city “hopes for a quick and meaningful solution for the citizens of Ukraine,” he added, before declaring “a time for support for Ukraine in the City of Orillia.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ukraine and its citizens.”

A flag raising will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Orillia Opera House.
