City probe leads to charges against taxi owner

The owner of a local taxi company was in court recently after an investigation by the City of Orillia.

John Beck, owner of Able Taxi, was charged with three counts of “taxicab vehicle licence holder fail to ensure taxicab meter adjusted in accordance with prescribed tariff.”

Beck pleaded guilty to one count, not guilty to another, and the third count was withdrawn. He was found guilty on two counts.

The offence occurred June 6.

Beck could not be reached for comment.

Shawn Crawford, the city's manager of legislative services, declined to provide further information, saying the city it is “not able to provide specific details about the investigation outside of the formal court process.”
