Anybody else feel at the breaking point?

It's weird because the weather is getting a bit nicer, it's daylight longer and certain things are getting back to a routine and yet I feel worse.

It's not any one big thing. It's a bunch of little things. Most of my issues, and maybe yours, are financially based.

I feel like we are being nickel and dimed to death.

We, as a society, have worked so hard to keep going. We have stayed home, cut back, cancelled trips, supported local, and now here we are still struggling.

And we are all being asked for more.

There was a movie back in the 1990s called Father of the Bride with Steve Martin. He played George Banks, who was losing his sanity as the bills for his daughter's big wedding skyrocketed. What finally set him off, though, wasn't the crazy price of the cake or his tuxedo  it was when he couldn’t buy 12 hot dog buns to go with the 12 hot dogs in the package. The buns came as eights, so you were basically forced to buy two packages.

I remember his rant as he ripped open packages of buns in the grocery aisle: “I am not going to pay for one more thing I don’t need.”

I heard that in my core!

Now, poor Steve ended up in the slammer for his outburst, but it was a point well taken.

It's how I feel now as I am paying twice as much at the grocery store as I used to and then they force me to pay for my plastic bag! It's that nickel that sends me over the edge.

For this opportunity, I am also being asked to be my own cashier and bagger?

Same principle as when we are at the checkout and they ask for me to round up for a donation to some cause.

I am not anti-charity. However, when I get asked at every store and in every drive-thru, every time, I get a bit frustrated.

If you’ve noticed in the news the stories of some dollar stores upping their prices. To be honest, things haven’t been a dollar for a long time. Soon, it may be more like $5?

The dollar stores have long been a very needed outlet for many people. It was a bit of fun thinking you could buy a few treats and not break the bank. Now, it feels like they are ruining that little bit of escapism.

I get the economic reality. Prices for product, shipping, gas have all gone up, but still it always ends up hurting the consumer.

There’s also been a lot of headlines about how Value Village has been pricing things out of the reach for those they are supposed to be servicing.

How can the cost of free stuff be going up? I understand VV is a for-profit business unlike the Salvation Army, etc., but still their clientele is usually thrifters looking for a bargain.

I have no issue with paying a fair price, but once I feel fleeced, I get angry.

While I’m ranting do you remember when stores and offices started to add on COVID cleaning fees? I resented it then and I resent it now as they are not removing it and never will.

If your office needs special filtration or plexiglass, shouldn’t that be the price of doing business?

Psychologically, I realize it's not really about the plastic bag or the donation — it's about a much bigger issue. We have all been through the ringer the last couple of years. It would be so nice if consumers could catch a break.

Would it be too much to get a free coffee, a coupon, a free toothbrush, or a plastic bag at no charge?

A heartfelt thank-you for keeping your business afloat all these months?

At this point, a nickel or dime would be appreciated.
