Mariposa Arts Theatre is busy rehearsing its new production, Blithe Spirit, which will be presented at the Orillia Opera House later this month.

Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH) Executive Director, Ninette Gyorody, wants everyone to know that the current slate of five exhibits at the museum is only up for two more weeks.

“These exhibits have drawn a lot of visitors to the museum. They are thought-provoking, intriguing, and diverse,” said Gyorody. “Come and see them if you haven’t already!”

You can find out lots more about these exhibits from the museum’s website (www.orilliamuseum.org) or by reading the story from earlier this week.

OMAH’s new slate of spring exhibits will be up and have an opening reception on April 29. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and open late on Thursdays until 7 p.m.

Because Easter weekend is coming up, things are quieter than usual in our fair town. Couchiching Craft Brewery still has a nice slate of performers, though: Friday, The Ronnie Douglas Blues Band; Saturday, Tamica and Gerry; and Sunday afternoon, Blues in the afternoon with Chris Robinson and Will Davis. Also, Chicago is playing at the casino. Some good music to fill out your holiday weekend.

Coming up later this month, of course, the iconic Roots North Music Festival is happening April 21-22. There are headlining acts at St. Paul’s Centre, which you must buy a ticket to see: Ronnie Douglas Band, Meredith Moon, Kellie Lauder, Tommy Youngsteen, and Michael Kaeshammer.

As well, there are literally dozens of other acts playing in venues all over town, which are mostly free to check out. To plan your Roots North weekend, go to the website here. Get your weekend pass soon, numbers are getting low.

Mariposa Arts Theatre’s production of Blithe Spirit is coming up April 13-16 and April 20-23, at the Orillia Opera House. Here's a synopsis: “Socialite and novelist Charles Condomine invites clairvoyant Madame Arcati to his house to conduct a seance. He hopes to use the experience to write his next book, but the plan backfires when Arcati manages to summon his late first wife Elvira...”

Sounds like a classic Noel Coward romp, and with the talent this group has, you are guaranteed an excellent night of theatre. For tickets, go to the Opera House box office here www.orilliaoperahouse.ca or call 705-326-8011.

Hibernation Arts (HA) has a guest artist this month, Alina Hromko, a photographer who has moved here from Ukraine. She has recently done some photo shoots with women, so her show is called 'Inner Women.' The show is up April 1 through 29. New artists at HA this month include Jennifer Lawson, Melissa Van Dam, and returning artist Barbara Schmidt.

Come out on Thursday April 13 for a 'Meet the Artists' event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This is your chance to meet the current artists, and of course, buy some art. Hibernation Arts is located at 17 Peter St. South in Orillia’s Arts District.

Make plans to grab your tickets for The Cellar Singers’ Gala Event on April 15, “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” The singers are thrilled to be able to put on a live gala finally this year, after the pandemic. The event will be at St. James’ Stubley auditorium, which will be transformed into a 20’s and 30’s art deco glam, roaring 20’s night club for the evening.

There will be lots of entertainment from members of the choir and a silent auction, as well as a Charleston dance lesson. Dress up, come out, and have a great time. For $40 tickets, go here.

Finally, under coming soon, the OMAH History Speakers Talk this month is on April 19 and it is all about the history of the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst. Join Judy Humphries, head of the Gravenhurst Archives, who will talk about the history of this state-of-the-art facility. The talk is virtual, via Zoom, and starts at 7 p.m. To receive the link, call Monica at 705-326-2159 or click here.

That’s all for this week, have a great long weekend and if you have arts news, send it to [email protected] by Tuesday at noon to be included.
