Jennifer Taverner and Michael York will be the guest soloists at the upcoming Cellar Singers concert on Saturday, Feb. 25.

I hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day and were treated, either by yourself or a loved one. And I hope you have been enjoying the warm and sunny weather. February hasn’t been too bad at all, so far.

We are midway through the month, which means it is almost Mardi Gras time. St. Paul’s United Church hosts a very fun, musical and festive Mardi Gras service each February, and this year it falls on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. The Phoenix Jazz Quintet will be playing as special guests and in addition there will be a special gumbo lunch served up afterwards, in the Banquet Hall. The gumbo lunch will be $15 per person. St. Paul’s is located at 62 Peter St. N.

St. Paul’s is also hosting another fun Pub Night this coming Fri. Feb. 17 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. These pub nights have been a wonderful way to beat the winter blahs, with musical guests, pub food and a bar, of course, in addition to a silent auction items to bid on. This month’s Pub Night features SAMMY, so you really don’t want to miss it.

Admission is $10 cash at the door, and please bring cash for the food and bar as well. For silent auction items, cash or cheque is accepted.

Speaking of SAMMY, the singer is hosting a special night of music and talk, to fulfill requirements for a school project which require her to spearhead a special community project. The night is called History of Her, and it’s all about female music icons through history. It’s done in the style of a live radio show, and will be at Lone Wolf Café on March 16 from 8 to 10 p.m.

All proceeds from the $25 tickets will go to benefit the Orillia Youth Centre. You can get tickets for this special evening here.

The Cellar Singers' mid-winter concert is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church. Join the choir and special guests, soloists Jennifer Taverner and Michael York, for Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. This is a very beautiful and moving piece, likely inspired by the deaths of Brahms’ mother, and his friend, Robert Schumann.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the website here.

The Orillia Concert Band also has a show coming up, on March 4 at St. Paul’s Centre. Featuring soloist Christina Bosco, the show will take the audience through the history of Broadway music, so there will be lots of familiar and well-loved songs to delight.

Couchiching Craft Brewery will be running a bar in the Atrium as well. Tickets are just $15 and you can buy them for cash at the door or online here.

Mariposa in Concert just announced Union Duke in concert, at St. Paul’s Centre, on March 25. The night also features Mariposa favourites James Gray and Josh Kvasnak. This is a popular bunch of musicians, so tickets are flying off the shelves. Better grab yours now, at www.mariposafolk.com.

Couchiching Craft Brewery features Vinyl Night with DJ Wilverine this Thursday, Jakob Pearce with Dave Hewitt Friday, and Run with the Kittens Saturday.

Have a great week. If you have arts news, send it to [email protected] by Tuesday at noon to be included.
