Community gardens on the grow at St. James' thanks to grant

Church receives funding from Community Foundation of Orillia and Area; 'We’re trying to feed the community in a healthy way during these weird times,' official says

An Orillia church will be able to feed more people in need thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Orillia and Area.

St. James’ Anglican Church received $1,656 to create six community garden boxes, bringing its total to nine.

The original plan was to use some of the produce for the church’s community lunch program, but that has been cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, so some of it will be frozen for later use. What can’t be frozen will be offered to organizations like the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen and Shelter.

“It’s for anyone in need and nothing’s going to be wasted,” said Christine Hager, chair of communications ministry at St. James'.

The “eco-gardens,” which will be pollinator-friendly, are “all about supporting people with a healthy food system,” Hager said.

“We’re trying to feed the community in a healthy way during these weird times,” she said, adding there could be more gardens created on the church grounds later. “If we can make this successful, sure. Why not? People need access to healthy food.”

Hager thanked the Community Foundation of Orillia and Area for the grant, and for approving the total amount that was requested.

“It was thrilling,” she said. “To get the full amount is amazing.”
