Over 100 education workers and union representatives protested near Simcoe North MPP Jill Dunlop’s office Friday morning.

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has decided to close all schools and learning centres next week due to the "evolving labour situation" in the province.

The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board has not yet announced its plans for next week.

"As we go into the weekend, we want our families to know that we are closely monitoring the evolving labour situation in the province involving the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Ontario Public Services Employees Union (OPSEU)," notes a release from the public school board post on its social media channels this afternoon.

Here's the remainder of the text:

Due to uncertainty regarding the current labour situation, and potential for continued labour disruption next week, all SCDSB schools, learning centres, and before and after school programs will be closed to students from Monday, Nov. 7 to Friday, Nov. 11, 2022.

Students will receive assigned coursework through the virtual learning platform established by their teacher.

Should the current labour disruption be resolved, all schools, learning centres, and before and after school programs will resume regular operations and will reopen to students.

  • Elementary and secondary special education county class students (excluding students in the Gifted Program) will return to in-person learning beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
  • Transportation will resume for students in special education county classes beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 8 and will operate as scheduled.

Technology

  • Your child’s school will contact you on Monday, Nov. 7 with information regarding next steps, including access to technology, should your child require it, and learning materials.

Child care

  • Child care centres operated by third-party providers in SCDSB schools will be open and will continue with regular operations.
  • Before and after school programs will not operate.
