A $7,819 dose of hilarity is just what Dr. Tim Hillson ordered with his second annual comedy show fundraiser. The money raised from his Cure for the Common Comedy show will support equipment needs in Soldiers’ Surgical Department.

As an ophthalmologist who practices in the Orillia community, Dr. Hillson said he enjoys the challenge of putting together this event as a kind of hobby that allows him to give back.

“Organizing this show is so fun for me,” Hillson explained. “It’s so rewarding to see our community members laughing and enjoying a night out while supporting a good cause.”

The Second City, the Toronto-based comedy group known for their improv and sketch shows, performed Cure for the Common Comedy Oct. 18 at the Orillia Opera House to a packed audience. The nearly $8,000 in laughs and proceeds from the show will improve patient care by supporting general surgical equipment needs.

“To have someone like Dr. Hillson take the time out of his busy schedule to plan an event like this one to benefit our Hospital and our community is so inspiring,” said Brittany Wilson, OSMH Foundation development officer. “Our community is so lucky to have compassionate, caring individuals who are dedicated to improving patient care at our hospital.”

Dr. Hillson has raised a total of $16,583 for the hospital through his comedy show events. He plans to organize the third annual show in late 2020.
