'Fabulous' Sunshine Fibre Fest on tap Saturday at ODAS Park

Fibre farmer, Huronia Spinners Guild, Sunshine Rug Hooking chapter, rabbits, alpacas, vendors and much more on the agenda, officials say

The Sunshine Fibre Fest will be held on Saturday at ODAS Park.

This event is billed as a "fabulous fleece and fibre festival featuring diverse vendors, demonstrations, live animals and more."

New this year at the festival — for those interested in farming their own fibre — Cat Haggert (@cat_theflax lady) will talk about growing and processing flax to obtain the fibre used to spin linen thread.

She'll demonstrate breaking, scutching, and hackling flax stalks and will, given the opportunity, talk all things flax for as long as you like.

The Huronia Spinners Guild will be demonstrating spinning, the Orillia Sunshine Rug Hooking Chapter will be demonstrating rug hooking, and Sue Needle will be grooming her angora rabbits. There will also be alpacas on hand.

Of course, there will be lots of wool available, from fleece to cleaned and combed fibre and rovings to hand-dyed yarn.

And there will be lots of other vendors, farmers and indie dyers selling all manner of fibres and accessories for textile crafts, and kits for cross stitch, dyeing, and rug hooking.

Sustainable fibres all contribute to us living more lightly on the earth, and you can see them at Sunshine Fibre Fest.

The event goes Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at ODAS Park, located at 4500 Fairgrounds Rd.
