Have you checked your smoke detector batteries lately?

Local fire department officials are encouraging residents to use this Sunday’s changing of the clocks to also check all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

Replace the batteries, and clean and test each unit, officials suggest.

This Sunday, Nov. 6, daylight time officially comes to an end as we “fall back.”

You’ll need to set your clocks back one hour as of 2 a.m.

Carbon monoxide is known as a “silent killer” because it has no smell, taste or visual warning and it has toxic effects.

Working carbon monoxide alarms provide early detection and alert occupants to evacuate in the case of a carbon monoxide leak.

It is the law in Ontario to have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms installed outside all sleeping areas, plus smoke alarms on every storey of a home.

Residential fires burn quickly — the sooner occupants are alerted to any smoke in the house, the more time they have to get out safely.

Smoke and CO alarms that are battery powered must have working batteries to function. It is recommended you test alarms monthly and replace batteries once a year at minimum.
