Fighting Owls ground Nighthawks in football playoff thriller

After tough 15-13 loss in Collingwood, the season comes to an end for Orillia Secondary School senior boys' football team

The host Collingwood Collegiate Institue Fighting Owls squeezed past the Orillia Secondary School Nighthawks 15-13 Tuesday in Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) senior boys' football action.

In the other quarterfinal matchup Tuesday, the Bear Creek Kodiaks overcame a 12-7 half-time deficit and roared back to be Alliston's Banting Marauders 31-18.

Today's action set up the SCAA semifinal games, which will be played on Friday.

The Kodiaks (4-2) will now face the Barrie North Vikings (5-1) in one of the SCAA semifinal games Friday, while Collingwood (3-3) will face the undefeated Eastview Wildcats (6-0) at noon at J.C. Massie Field at Georgian College.

The winners of those games will meet in the SCAA championship game on Nov. 7 at 2 p.m., at J.C. Massie Field.

The SCAA champion advances to the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) title game against the St. Joan of Arc Knights, the champions from the Catholic School Athletics of Simcoe County (CSASC). That game will be played on Nov. 14 at J.C. Massie Field in another 2 p.m. kickoff.

Meanwhile, in SCAA junior action, the quarterfinals were played on Monday. Nantyr Shores downed Orillia Secondary School, 37-1 in Innisfil, while Bear Creek blanked Barrie North, 21-0. Collingwood also shut out Innisdale, 22-0, and Eastview was victorious over Nottawasaga Pines, 35-6.

The SCAA junior semifinals will be played Thursday, with Bear Creek taking on Collingwood, and Nantyr Shores playing Eastview at J.C. Massie Field in the other match-up. The SCAA junior final will be played Nov. 7, followed by the GBSSA championship game on Nov. 13.
