Fire crews called to early-morning fuel spill on West Street

'There is a contractor on site to clean up the contaminated materials,’ said local fire official who said he is 'very confident' in the cleanup efforts

The Orillia Fire Department responded to a fuel spill at the Canadian Tire Gas+ this morning.

Orillia Fire Capt. Jeff Balkwill says a total of eight firefighters responded to the spill at the West Street South business. The call came in around 6:30 a.m., he said.

“Absorbent was put down,” he explained. “There is a contractor on site to clean up the contaminated materials.”

Balkwill says the gas was spilled by a tanker truck that was fuelling. He isn’t sure how many litres of gas were spilled, but he says there is no danger to the public.

“I’m very confident with the contractors and the work that they have done,” he said. “The city has been here assisting us and we’ve checked catch basins.”

As a precaution, the fire department will be cleaning the ditch on Queen Street.

“We just want to make sure if there is any fuel it isn’t moved during a rain storm,” Balkwill said.

The Canadian Tire Gas+ reopened for business at around 8:30 this morning.
