Firefighters quickly douse brush fire on Cedar Island Road (4 photos)

'There was other signs of an old mattress and some garbage in the area' where the fire started, says fire chief

Orillia firefighters were called to douse a brush fire just off Cedar Island Road Monday evening.

Two fire trucks arrived on the scene and the fire was extinguished quickly.

The fire erupted in the brush near the Millennium Trail, just off Cedar Island Road, across from the townhouse development.

Fire chief Brent Thomas said it appears someone was hanging out in the brush area and started a fire.

"There was other signs of an old mattress and some garbage in the area," said Thomas.

While careless burning is never in season, Thomas noted there is not a burn ban in the city. There is, however, a bylaw that spells out the rules around having a backyard fire.
