First hole punched through Front St. plaza as demolition begins

Demolition, part of waterfront redevelopment plans, expected to wrap up in February

Demolition of a portion of the Front Street Plaza has begun.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a small section of the plaza, right next to the Metro grocery store at 70 Front St. N., had been demolished — a step toward the city’s goal of extending Coldwater Street to the waterfront and opening up a view of the lake from that street.

The entire plaza, with the exception of Metro, will be torn down as part of the city’s waterfront redevelopment plans.

Demolition is expected to be finished in February.

In a memo to council, staff noted the goal is to have site restoration work — including facade work on the remaining Metro part of the plaza as well as the creation of a temporary access road behind the plaza — occur this month.
