Five Orillia residents among 78 new COVID cases in region today

Of the five new Orillia cases, two are youths and the other three are under the age of 64; There is also one new case in Severn Township today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 78 new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (April 30). 

The death reported today was an Adjala-Tosorontio man between 45 and 64 years old whose case was linked to an out-of-area workplace outbreak. he died on April 15. This is the first COVID-related death reported in Adjala-Tosorontio.

There are 1,369 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 3,300 variant cases confirmed to date, with 1,016 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 10,382 cases of COVID-19 with 8,341 of those cases recovered and 225 cases ending in death. 

There are 47 people from Simcoe County and two people from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes three new hospitalizations since yesterday.

To date, 189,628 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 30 per cent of the region's population. About three per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise noted):

  • Orillia (5): Two youth under 18 years old, and three people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact, one was outbreak-related, and one was community-acquired.
  • Severn (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Collingwood (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Wasaga Beach (4): Three people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Two cases were community-acquired.
  • Barrie (24): Four youth under 18 years old, 11 people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, four people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Nine cases are linked to close contact, three were community-acquired, two were outbreak-related, and one is linked to travel.
  • Springwater (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.  
  • Innisfil (10): One youth under 18 years old, six people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact and two were community-acquired. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (14): Three youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, six people between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 tears old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact, and two were community-acquired.
  • Tay (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case was community-acquired.
  • Tiny (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Essa (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • New Tecumseth (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • There were eight cases in Muskoka, including three in Huntsville, one in Gravenhurst, two in Muskoka Lakes,  and two in Bracebridge.
  • There is one case with location information still pending.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on April 28.
