Friends are remembering Ray Kiff as a man who was generous with both his time and his money.

Kiff died Dec. 20. He was 84.

He began working as an ophthalmologist at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) after moving to Orillia from London, Ont., in 1966, but his talents were put to use beyond the hospital walls. He liked to travel, hunt and take part in various sports. He also often had his eyes on the sky.

Bird watching was one of his favourite activities — something he enjoyed doing on his own and as part of the Orillia Naturalists’ Club.

“He was very keen on contributing to our knowledge of birds,” said Nancy Ironside, who looks after publicity for the club.

The two had a “common passion” for bluebirds, she noted. Kiff placed bluebird boxes around the region and checked in on them often. He also took part in the annual Christmas bird count.

“We wanted to preserve nature,” Ironside said. “What would the world be like without wild places?”

Kiff also once held the title of chief of staff at OSMH. That’s where Richard Johnston, a retired doctor, got to know him.

“He was always a good leader. With a measured tone, he worked well with everyone,” Johnston said. “He was a consummate professional — good attitude, good integrity, good doctor.”

Kiff and his family donated to many local causes, but never sought the spotlight, he added.

“He was very generous,” Johnston said. “I was sorry to see him go.”

A celebration of life for Kiff will take place Jan. 11 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Centre. Donations of eyeglasses will be accepted for Rayjon, an organization that provides glasses to those in need.
