Four local residents among 74 new COVID cases in region today

There is one new case in Orillia and three new cases in Oro-Medonte - all involve people under the age of 64, the health unit reports

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 74 new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (April 29). 

The death reported today was a Barrie woman between 45 to 64 years old. She died on April 22.

There are 1,372 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 3,234 variant cases confirmed to date, with 1,004 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 10,312 cases of COVID-19 with 8,264 of those cases recovered and 224 cases ending in death. 

There are 48 people from Simcoe County and two people from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes three new hospitalizations since yesterday.

To date, 184,531 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 29 per cent of the region's population. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise noted):

  • Orillia (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.
  • Oro-Medonte (3): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. All three cases are listed as community transmission. 
  • Wasaga Beach (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases were community-acquired.
  • Barrie (22): Four youth under 18 years old, ten people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, and three people between 65 and 79 years old. Eight cases are linked to close contact, two were community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Innisfil (10): Three youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (14): Two youth under 18 years old, four people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, four people between 45 and 64 tears old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact, one was outbreak relate, and two were community-acquired.
  • Midland (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Tiny (2): One person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old 
  • Essa (8): One youth under 18, one person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and five people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact. 
  • New Tecumseth (8): Two youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, and three people between 45 and 64 years old. Five cases are linked to close contact and one is listed as community transmission. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old.
  • There was also one case reported in Muskoka Lakes.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on April 28.
