Four-year-old local cancer survivor opens Toronto Stock Exchange

It took two stools and two hands for Jordan McInnerney to push the button to open the Toronto Stock Exchange

It was a grown-up honour for a little girl who has beat the odds.

Barrie's Jordan McInerney was invited to ring the opening bell on Friday at the Toronto Stock Exchange.

In so doing, she was raising awareness about childhood and adolescent cancers.

The invitation was made by Ac2orn (Advisory for Cancer Childhood Oncology Research Network).

Jordan has been fighting a battle since she was four months old, going through chemotherapy and countless bone-marrow procedures.

She is now 15 months post CAR-T cell therapy.

Her treatment was done between Toronto's Sick Kids Hospital and a hospital in Philadelphia.

CAR-T stands for Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy. It is an option if chemo and bone marrow isn't working. It is done in the United States and just recently in Canada at Sick Kids Hospital.

Mom Tammy Hopper McInerney says: :Jordan has had a fantastic summer. She is back to doing what a kid should be doing. She's playing and fighting with her two brothers. She even left us for a week for summer camp. Jordan is back to looking like she should with her curls growing back."

As for the big job of opening the stock market, McInerney says they did practise, but didn't need to.

"We didn't need to worry about her. When the time came she just marched in with a mission and knew exactly what to do," she said. "There were a lot of people there and lots of excitement. While we were all visiting, Jordan was picking up all the confetti that had shot out."

September is Childhood and Adolescent Cancer Awareness Month.

It is also back to school month for Jordan who will soon turn five.

McInerny says the whole family is excited.

"She goes into senior kindergarten at Andrew Hunter Elementary School. Last year, we lost a lot of days due to illness, but this year we are hoping for great times and thankful to be where we are.

"We just hope this year is all about being a kid again."
