On June 19, Science North, Northern Ontario’s original science centre, will celebrate its 40th anniversary.

On June 19, Science North, Northern Ontario’s original science centre, will celebrate its 40th anniversary. To mark this significant milestone, Science North is hosting a day of festivities, inviting the community to join in the celebration.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate 40 years of inspiring curiosity, igniting passion, and fostering a love for science,” said Science North CEO Ashley Larose.

“This milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of our community and the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see Science North continue to find new ways to engage with our community while also expanding its presence across Northern Ontario and reaching audiences around the world with our travelling exhibitions and multimedia experiences. We look forward to another 40 years of inspiring all people to interact with science in the world around them.”

From 12-4 p.m., the festivities will include a community time capsule, barbecue lunch, outdoor science activities, and exclusive screenings of Decade of Dreams (1994), a movie about the history of Science North’s first 10 years.

In a nod to the past, Science North will charge $5 for general admission for the day, the same price as when it opened its doors in 1984. Members can still access the science centre for free and all outdoor science activities will be free as well.

Science North will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for regular operations.

Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to write down some of their favourite memories of Science North and include them in a community time capsule.  From past exhibits to cherished memories, the time capsule will allow the community to reflect on the past and share their vision for the future of Science North. For those seeking a trip down memory lane, Science North is hosting a Cinema Social event for

its 50+ audience starting at 9 a.m. Guests will get exclusive access to the science centre followed by refreshments, and a screening of Decade of Dreams (1994). To cap off the nostalgic event, Science North’s original Bluecoat, Franco Mariotti, will present the untold stories of Science North and host a Q&A.
