Are you looking for a sure-fire way to side-step the January blahs?

One of the trickiest things about the current stay-at-home situation we find ourselves in is the constant repetition and the lack of novelty we are finding in our day-to-day lives.

The absence of anything to really look forward to can be de-motivating and soon we find ourselves stuck in a rather mundane feedback loop of the “same-old-same-olds”, like Bill Murray’s character in the movie Groundhog Day.

With these potentially pesky problems in mind, your friendly neighbourhood librarians have come up with a very fun, simple solution.

Remember the joy you felt as a kid when you would get a “surprise bag” at the end of a friend’s birthday party? Well, library staff are keen to bundle up that same thrill of anticipation into a bespoke “surprise bag” of hand-selected books and movies for you to take home and enjoy at your leisure.

There are bags for everyone: kids, teens, adults and educators!

The process is simple: fill out a brief online form on the Orillia Public Library website, (or call the library directly) to help the staff match you up with your next favourite read.

If you want to talk to us in person, please call the Information Desk at 705-325-2556 for surprise bags for adults or the Family Department at 705-325-2559 for surprise bags for kids, teens and educators.

Once you receive notification your Surprise Bag is ready, visit our Curbside Pickup Desk at the Mississaga Street entrance with your library card and your mask. The response to this brand-new service has been remarkable already.

One of our first recipients wrote us to say: “They were chosen with such great care. It really made my day! Thank you so much. It was like the care package I didn’t know I needed!”

An added bonus is the books in your Surprise Bag for adults are perfect candidates for your entries in OPL’s 2021 Reading Resolution Challenge! For each book you read until Feb. 27, you can fill out a ballot to win the enticing, filled-to-the-brim "Get Cozy Gift Basket."

Ballots are available online through our website or look for a paper ballot in your Curbside Pickup order.
