Health unit reports 4 COVID-related deaths in Simcoe-Muskoka

Testing shows 64 new COVID-19 cases since last update May 29

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting four new deaths and four more people hospitalized with COVID-19, according to the most recent update on May 30.

The health unit has reported 22 COVID-19 deaths in May.

There are 21 people from the region hospitalized because of COVID-19.

Testing has captured 64 new COVID-19 cases in the region since the last update on May 29. Because testing is not available to everyone, case counts are underestimated. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 45,601 cases of COVID-19, with 44,759 of those cases recovered and 496 cases ending in death.

Of the deaths reported by the health unit since March 2020, 426 were COVID-19-related, 56 deaths were not related to COVID-19 but the person tested positive, and for 14 of them, the cause of death is unknown or pending.

To date, 86 per cent of the population aged five years old and up are fully vaccinated with two or more doses, and 18 per cent of the region’s total population (including children) is unvaccinated.

There are seven active outbreaks in Simcoe-Muskoka, down from 14 outbreaks on May 29. The current active outbreaks include five in institutional settings (hospitals, long-term care, retirement homes), one in a congregate setting (group homes, shelters), and one in a community setting. There are currently no outbreaks reported in an educational setting.

According to monitoring of the region’s hospitals by the health unit, 61.4 per cent of the region’s ICU beds are full and 19.4 per cent of the ventilator beds are occupied. Acute care occupancy is highest with 90 per cent of the beds in the region currently full.
