Heroic Orillia man recognized for saving couple from 2021 house fire

'I'm just so thankful that I was able to piece everything together the way that I did,' says Mitchell Dean of his efforts that likely saved lives of elderly couple

Orillia resident Mitchell Dean was formally recognized for his heroic actions in January 2021, when he kicked down the front door of a burning house to save an elderly couple that was trapped inside. (Click here to read our original story)

Last January, upon returning to his home on the corner of Barrie Road and Marlissa Drive, Dean noticed a neighbouring home had caught fire, and he called 911 before heading over to investigate.

He heard a banging noise from inside the home, initially thinking it came from the crackle of the fire before realizing people were trapped inside.

“I listened to the sound a little more, and I was like there's no way that's just something crackling in the fire - it sounds like somebody's stuck,” Dean told OrilliaMatters. “I could tell somebody was definitely in there.”

Dean then kicked in the front door, and helped the couple make it to safety.

The two dogs inside the home were able to make it out, as well.

For his actions, Dean was presented with a certificate of appreciation by city council Monday evening.

“There are times in our lives where we may be faced with a very tough decision, especially when somebody's health or even life are in danger,” said Mayor Steve Clarke.

“Mitchell stepped up, didn't hesitate, and went in and rescued two people from a burning house. I don't pretend to know what level of consciousness goes into that decision, or level of courage, but our hats are off to you," said the mayor. “Please accept our most sincere gratitude for your heroic action.”

Dean said he’s simply grateful for recognizing what was happening at the time.

“It’s not like this is something normal people can train for in their lives to be ready for,” he told OrilliaMatters after Monday's virtual presentation. “I'm just so thankful that I was able to piece everything together the way that I did.”

On top of Monday’s recognition at council, Dean said numerous people have reached out to congratulate him since the incident, including the couple and their family members.

“It definitely feels pretty cool. I don't think I've ever experienced a feeling like this,” he said. “I mean, it's not like you get the chance to every day.”
