Hikers enjoy sun, scenery, beaver dams, snakes (5 photos)

Members of Ganaraska Hiking Club travelled to McCrae Lake, north of Orillia, and enjoyed challenging scramble over rocks and roots

What a weekend for a hike!

Members of the combined Barrie and Orillia chapters of the Ganaraska Hiking Club travelled to McCrae Lake, about 45 minutes north of Orillia, on a beautiful if hot day in this magnificent Canadian Shield country.

The hike ticked all the boxes for hikers: challenging scramble over rocks and roots, wildlife encounters in the form of a very large and industrious beaver doing repairs to a beaver dam, and a Massassauga Rattlesnake in a defensive pose.

Wildflowers added to the beauty of the day, and all agreed it was a wonderful hike.

The Orillia Club still has three more Wednesday evening hikes for new hikers/returning former hikers. Click on “Find a hike” on the Google Calendar on the club's website: www.ganaraska-hiking-trail.org.
