The holiday season is a time of reflection, gratitude, and giving.

Amidst the joyous celebrations, there’s a profound opportunity to honour the memory of loved ones who have touched our lives in special ways. One meaningful way to pay tribute is by making donations to Hospice Orillia in their honour.

“At Hospice Orillia, our commitment is to offer practical, emotional, and spiritual support to individuals within our community who are facing advanced illness, death, and bereavement,” explains Amanda Tevelde, communications, fundraising, and community relations specialist.

“Our dedicated volunteers and staff extend compassionate and respectful support to clients and their loved ones. We prioritize honouring their choices throughout their life journey.”

As we celebrate the holidays with our loved ones, it’s essential to extend compassion to those facing a life-limiting illness and their families. Below we explore the significance of donating in memory of loved ones during the holidays, exploring how this act of generosity can bring comfort, create a lasting legacy, and embody the spirit of love and remembrance.

Creating a lasting legacy

Donating in honour of a loved one allows their memory to live on through a lasting legacy. By supporting causes or organizations that held significance to them, you ensure that their impact continues, leaving a positive mark on the world. This act of generosity transforms grief into a force for good, embodying the enduring spirit of those we hold dear.

Expressing love through action

The holiday season is a time for expressing love, and what better way to honour a cherished individual than by taking positive action in their memory? Donating to causes they cared about or supporting initiatives that align with their values becomes a tangible expression of love and a powerful way to carry forward their passions.

Fostering connection and healing

Grief during the holidays can be particularly challenging. Donating in honour of a loved one becomes a source of solace and healing, fostering a sense of connection with them even in their physical absence. Knowing that your actions contribute to the well-being of others can bring a sense of purpose and peace during this season of reflection.

Encouraging acts of kindness

Making donations in honour of a loved one can inspire others to do the same. By sharing your story and encouraging friends and family to join in the act of giving, you create a ripple. This collective effort becomes a beautiful tribute, amplifying the positive influence your loved one had in their lifetime.

“In every contribution, there lies a narrative of love — a testament to an enduring connection that surpasses the confines of time. It represents a sincere effort to enhance the world in their honour,” remarks Tevelde. “This is the exact reason why, for every donation surpassing $20 designated to Hospice Orillia, a festive card will be dispatched to a recipient selected by the kind-hearted donor. This gesture aims to share the impact that their loved one has left behind.”

Hospice Orillia has released their 2023 Gift Giving Guide, which outlines how your donations will help the organization. If you see a larger item you would like to donate towards, they offer the opportunity to set up monthly giving to help you reach your pledge goal. For example, if you would like to help cover the cost of the food for their facilities dog, Trooper, you could make a monthly donation of $50 per month. Not only would this help cover Trooper’s expenses, but it would also provide you the opportunity to add your loved one’s name to the Tree of Life. In the spirit of love, remembrance, and generosity, donating in honour of a loved one during the holiday season is a deeply meaningful way to celebrate their life and legacy. Through this act, you not only pay tribute to the impact they had but also support the programs offered through Hospice Orillia.
