It's spring! That means it's time for the Home and Cottage Show

26th annual event starts Friday at Barnfield Point; In lieu of admission fee, people are asked to make a donation to Building Hope

Many believe emerging daffodils, struggling their way through the snow and ice, are a sure sign of spring.

But for many in Orillia, the new season hasn’t started until the annual Simcoe Spring Home and Cottage Show happens.

This year’s 26th annual event opens its three-day weekend run Friday.

“The show kicks off spring,” said organizer Glenn Wagner. “Over the years, it’s really become a destination event that people look forward to.”

Once again this year, there will be more than 80 booths featuring a wide range of goods and services jammed into the Barnfield Point Recreation Centre.

“We’re sold out again and we have a list of businesses on a waiting list that would love to be able to attend,” said Wagner, who said some local businesses have been part of the show since Day 1.

Once again this year, you can find knowledgeable local business and tradespeople who will be selling their services and wares but who are also on hand just to chat.

“I think what’s so great about the show is you have a chance to connect with the experts, with the business owners and to ask questions one-on-one,” said Wagner. “If you have a question, this is the place to come for answers.”

At the 80-plus booths, you will find everything from awnings to windows, landscaping services, paving, insurance, fireplaces and floors, heating and cooling to home improvements and everything in between.

“A lot of small businesses who do quality work don’t have storefronts,” said Wagner. “This is an ideal way for them to connect with customers.”

For the second straight year, there is no admission charge for the event. In lieu of a set fee, attendees are encouraged to make a donation in support of Building Hope, the campaign to build a new homeless shelter and other amenities at a facility to be constructed on Queen Street.

“It’s a calling,” Wagner said of Building Hope; he is the co-chair of the campaign and a long-time supporter of The Lighthouse Men’s Shelter and Soup Kitchen.

The new facility is “a project I feel led to be involved with and it’s something I’m trying to champion. It’s another small way to give back,” said Wagner.

Last year, a wild winter storm hampered attendance at the show but more than $5,600 was raised for Building Hope.

“My goal this year is $10,000,” said Wagner. “That’s what we’re hoping for.”

Everyone who makes a donation will have their name put in a draw for one of dozens of door prizes that include everything from restaurant gift certificates to a 55-inch HD TV.

“People can come and support a great cause, win prizes, see the amazing booths and take advantage of special show pricing,” said Wagner. “There’s also a great restaurant here, you can sit down and yak, walk around and visit great local businesses … it’s a great atmosphere.”

The show runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
