Oct. 7 marks the 10th anniversary of the World Day For Decent Work, and the North Simcoe Muskoka & District Labour Council will join Labour Councils across the country in marking the date by sending messages to MPPs in Muskoka, Orillia, and beyond.

Between 4 and 5 pm, people are invited to stop by the office of MPP Norm Miller (Bracebridge) or MPP Jill Dunlop (Orillia) and to write a message in chalk outlining their hopes and concerns for our economic recovery.

“If we’ve learned anything over the past six months, it has been that too many families and workers are living paycheque to paycheque,” shared Mike De Rose, President of the Labour Council. “This is a simple and quick action. People come by, write their message in chalk, take a selfie, and post it to their social media accounts.

"Whether their concerns are overcrowded classrooms, unsafe work environments, childcare, or precarious work, our elected officials need to hear it and see it from their constituents if they are going to make meaningful changes," said De Rose.

Ontario had lost over 2 million jobs by May as COVID-19 ravaged so many businesses and sectors. As the economy reopens in Ontario and across the country, there has been a significant increase in people committing to not returning to the pre-pandemic ways.

“Amid the uncertainty and the fear that comes with this pandemic, there has been hope and determination to build a more fair, equitable, and greener economy, “ shared De Rose. “We invite anyone to stop by and share their message with our representatives.”

The North Simcoe Muskoka & District Labour Council is committed to supporting workers, their families, and their communities through political action and advocacy.
