There’s something new going on at the Leacock Museum National Historic Site. To some, it’s a beautiful hidden gem. A piece of Orillia, original in its tranquillity and stunning atmosphere. To others, it’s a piece of local history, and a proud part of our city’s culture.

The summer home of humourist Stephen Leacock was once a hive of social activity. With its incredible views, century-old charm, and lovely gardens and walkways, a little planning will guide it back to that.

This month, patrons can enjoy Autumn Tea Service on the covered front porch of the Stephen Leacock Museum. With a delectable assortment of savouries and sweets, curated by Melanie Robinson and Eclectic Cafe, foodies and tea fans can enjoy breathtaking views of the lake and gardens in autumn splendour, while embracing the British tradition of Afternoon Tea.

Offered every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in October at 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., for $25 plus HST per person, you’ll be treated to a three-tier tray of savoury strudels, cucumber sandwiches, smoked salmon, and assorted sweets such as carrot cakes, lemon squares, chocolate Nanaimo bars, macaroons and blueberry scones.

So far, this successful program has hosted small tour groups, local friends, and even charming youth looking for new experiences. Reservations must be booked and paid at least 48 hours in advance. Call 705-325-2196 Wednesday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to book your spot, or email your phone number to [email protected], and the Leacock Museum will reach out to you.

Looking to the future, the Museum hopes to be able to offer more exciting opportunities, and wants to hear from you what sort of plans would excite you. Do you want to see a Christmas Nutcracker Tea offered in the Sunroom?  Old Time Christmas Family Photo Mini-sessions in Leacock’s Living Room?  The return of Greater Than Gatsby and Children’s Day in 2022?  How would you like to see this magical property awaken from its COVID slumber?

Orillia has shown an incredible ability to adapt to challenging times in beautiful ways. The Leacock Museum is thrilled to be a part of that community initiative. As you’ve heard many times throughout summer, here in our lovely city . . . See you on the patio!
