LETTER Council conducting its business 'in darkness,' citizen says

Oro-Medonte's 'devious' decision to stop live streaming of its municipal meetings leaves local resident fuming

Oro-Medonte Township Council voted recently to nix live-streaming of its meetings. Instead, the recordings will be uploaded to YouTube after the meetings and will be available on the video streaming website for two weeks.

OrilliaMatters welcomes letters to the editor. This letter is in response to our recent story about Oro-Medonte Township's decision related to live-streaming of meetings. Send letters to [email protected]

Until this week, I didn’t think there was anything more this council could/would do that would prove to me the devious manner of shrouding its activities and conduct in darkness from the residents of our township.

Before this council came to power, Oro-Medonte Township had an open, responsible and transparent manner of conducting the business of governing even before it became fashionable to do so.

The latest evidence of this deceitful behaviour is that instead of continuing live streaming of council meetings, you chose to operate in an even more secretive manner.

Instead of adopting the request by several council members to make live streaming of special council meetings in addition to regular council meetings available and of archiving the minutes, you have chosen to delete ALL live streaming of meetings and to only archive meetings for two weeks.

The only way for constituents to know what council decisions are made and to provide feedback is to attend meetings in person.

Almost all municipalities in Simcoe County live stream and archive their meetings.
