The Orillia Public Library kicked off summer reading with a giant leap in registration.
More than 160 kids signed up on opening day of the TD Summer Reading Club. This is nearly a 23% increase from last year, and the vacation hasn’t even started!
Our top registering schools so far are Monsignor Lee Catholic School, Harriett Todd, and Orchard Park Public Schools. We welcome members to join throughout the summer holiday, but starting early means more prizes.
Membership in our Teen “Read for the Chair” Club is well on its way to being record-setting with a 66% increase already.
The TD Summer Reading Club is a country-wide reading program for public libraries. In Orillia, we receive generous financial support from the local chapters of the Lions Club and the Rotarians for summer prizes and incentives.
Club members are encouraged to meet with our “book genies” each week to talk about what they are reading and get suggestions on next steps. Teens can report on Snapchat, and all members can report via email.
Literacy studies know that people who talk about what they read are far more likely to keep reading, especially if they have an expert finding books that suit them perfectly.
The Library is going to be a busy spot as we expect to welcome nearly 1,000 people, ages 0-18, this summer.
