LIVE: Wage subsidy to be extended beyond June, PM says

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says wage subsidy extension will kickstart economy, boost job creation following record job losses in April

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Friday that the federal government is extending the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy beyond June, in an effort to "kickstart the economy and boost job creation." 

According to labour force data released Friday by Statistics Canada, nearly two million jobs were lost across the country in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prime minister also announced the introduction of a new industry strategic council that will be tasked with looking at the impacts of COVID-19 on the Canadian economy. 

At noon, the federal governent will announce a new, $500-million fund for the culture sector, which Trudeau says will assist artists, cultural organizations and athletes during the pandemic.
