WATCH: Feds sign agreement for 7.6 million rapid COVID-19 tests

Provinces and territories will receive the tests to ramp up COVID-19 testing

Canada is one step closer to doling out rapid tests for COVID-19, the federal government says.

In a press conference this morning, Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand and Minister of Health Patty Hajdu announced the government has signed an agreement with BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) to purchase 7.6 million rapid, point-of-care, SARS-CoV-2 antigen tests for use on the BD Veritor™ Plus System, and up to 2,172 analyzers.

These will be deployed to the provinces and territories in order to ramp up COVID-19 testing.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is slated to make a COVID-19 announcement at 11:30 a.m. today.

Trudeau will make the announcement with Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand, and President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc.

Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Theresa Tam and Deputy Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Howard Njoo will also be in attendance.
