Local hikers enjoy area trails despite uncertain spring weather

On Saturday, members of the local chapter of the Ganaraska Hiking Club cleaned up a stretch of the trail on Sadowa Road and got a car full of recyclables

Members of the local chapter of the Ganaraska Hiking Club have continued to trek through this transition season and it has been challenging at times to find good enough footing.

However, as always, icers and hiking poles have been brought out to help save the day.

In late March, hikers enjoyed traipsing through Scout Valley, a city-owned forested area located off of Old Barrie Road, with one entrance across from University Avenue. Hikers discovered that marker posts have been installed in Scout Valley, making it much easier to find your way.

On March 30, members enjoyed a hike to Coopers Falls, north of Washago; they entered through Housey’s Rapids Road. The conditions were not great as melting snow and rain created boggy conditions that made footing quite tricky in some areas.

On April 6, local hikers ventured to the Ganaraska Trail from Old Second South near the junction of Horseshoe Valley Road and Highway 400.

On April 8, members of the club cleaned up a stretch along the Ganaraska Trail on Sadowa Road.

Isobel Thorup, who the club calls its 83-year-old poster girl for hiking, led the hike and at the end of the day could be seen grinning from the driver’s seat of her car as she prepared to take the roadside harvest of recyclables, beer cans and garbage to their suitable end destinations.

There is plenty of good hiking to be had even with the uncertain spring weather.  The club welcomes members. For further information see their website: - www.ganaraska-hiking-trail.org
