Is it possible to imagine a world free of inequality — where all people regardless of gender, race, and diversity of thought or affiliation are celebrated as worthy? Where people’s differences are appreciated?

International Women’s Day, celebrated since 1911, is a day to think about these possibilities and to plan actions to make it happen. It’s a day to celebrate the many achievements of women and to also remember that there are still many barriers to conquer. It’s a day to think about equity.

This year, CFUW Orillia is proud to host a celebratory event in honour of International Women’s Day on March 8. It will be open to the public and held at Creative Nomad Studios, 23 Mississaga St. W., from 7 to 9 p.m. The evening will feature three prominent women, Lorraine McRae, Dr. Linda Rodenburg and Debbie Singh, in a panel discussion on the theme of equity, diversity, inclusion and unconscious bias/embracing equity.

Lorraine is an inspirational teacher, curriculum developer, songwriter, visionary and peace maker from the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, where she was elected the first woman chief in 1994 and served in that role until 2000. She is presently the head councillor at Rama.

Dr. Rodenburg is a founding faculty member at the Orillia campus of Lakehead University and is passionate about community and committed to Lakehead’s vision to provide a transformative university experience accessible to all who choose to be lifelong learners.

Debbie is an inclusive senior executive in human resources at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. She develops, as well as champions, an innovative, progressive diversity and inclusion agenda and talent framework.

Included in the evening will be live music, an art display with works from local women, and a chance for socializing and networking.

We invite you to come out and join us for an evening that promises to be both exciting and educational and, above all, celebratory.

The event is free but a donation of $5 at the door is suggested to offset costs. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Advance registration is required. To register, click here.
