Keystone Montessori’s new student-run café, the Keystone Café, has been making waves in the school community since its launch just over three weeks ago.

The café, operated entirely by Grade 7 and 8 students, has been providing hot beverages such as coffee, an assortment of teas, and hot chocolate to the parents and teachers of the school. What sets the café apart, however, is that it operates on a donation basis only, with all proceeds going towards the Lighthouse, a non-profit organization that provides housing and support services to the most vulnerable in Simcoe County.

Since its launch, the Keystone Café has already raised over $200 for the Lighthouse, a remarkable achievement in such a short period of time. The students have been hard at work, grinding the beans, boiling the water, using the French press, communicating with the customers, and tracking the sales. In doing so, they are learning important life skills such as responsibility, organization, accountability, attention to detail, and courtesy.

The project has been a great success, not just in terms of the money raised for the Lighthouse, but also in terms of the skills that the students are developing. The teachers at Keystone Montessori are incredibly proud of the energy and enthusiasm that the students have put into the café, and Mr. Hewitt, the school owner, is thrilled with what has been created.

“I am so proud of the students. They have taken initiative and created something special. Plus, the best part is I get to enjoy a wonderful, freshly brewed cup of coffee every morning without having to leave the school.”

The Keystone Café is not just a great way for the students to develop important life skills. It is also a way for the school to give back to the community. The Lighthouse is a non-profit organization that provides hope, home, and a future to the most vulnerable in Simcoe County, including those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The organization operates a homeless shelter, supportive housing, a café, and community services, all of which are vital resources for those in need.

By supporting the Lighthouse, the students at Keystone Montessori are making a real difference in the lives of others. Their efforts are helping to ensure that those who are most in need in the community have access to the support and resources they need to thrive. And by doing so, the students are learning important lessons about the power of community, the importance of giving back, and the impact that even small actions can have.

The Keystone Café is a remarkable achievement, both for the students who are running it and for the community as a whole. It is a testament to the power of education and the importance of giving back, and it is a shining example of what can be accomplished when people come together for a common cause. As the Keystone Café continues to operate and raise money for the Lighthouse, it is sure to inspire others to take action and make a difference in their own communities.
