Loobies: Comfort food done right in the midst of uncertain times

'We will continue to take it day by day and we will adapt in the best way we feel is necessary,' says co-owner of popular Craighurst eatery

It's Small Business Week in Ontario. In uncertain times, there is one thing that we can always count on: comfort food done right.

Loobies has been serving up hearty portions of classic favourites like fish ‘n chips, soups and sandwiches, bacon and eggs and tasty burgers in the heart of Oro-Medonte for 18 years.

The small family diner known for its value-packed homemade meals makes most of its menu items from scratch. And although the restaurant has had to close its indoor section due to COVID-19, Loobies continues to serve its popular fare to the community through steady takeout and patio service.

Loobies’ new outdoor dining tables and takeout window lets people enjoy the comfort food they know and love, without having to worry about grocery shopping and cooking at home.

Owner Jennifer Richardson-Ljubicic and her husband and co-owner, Ed Ljubicic, felt that given the uncertain nature of the pandemic, this is the best option to keep patrons and staff safe.

Loobies’ umbrella-topped outdoor tables allow guests the option to enjoy their meals in the fresh outdoor air. All outdoor tables are socially distanced and, as Richardson-Ljubicic explains, “We have tried to make every individual feel as comfortable as possible through these difficult times and changes.”

Richardson-Ljubicic admits that the COVID-19 crisis hit her business hard.

“One of our biggest difficulties was having to let go of all of our staff. They are like family to us, and some have been here for the entire 18 years that we’ve been in business. That change was the most heartbreaking for us," she said.

As the winter months approach and the COVID-19 crisis wears on, supporting local businesses is more important than ever.

Richardson-Ljubicic explains that due to safety precautions there are no plans to reopen the indoor dining space during winter, but she hopes that people will continue to support the restaurant by placing takeout orders.

She understands that through the colder months, things may be increasingly more difficult. However, she is approaching this unprecedented challenge with a positive attitude.

“We will continue to take it day by day and we will adapt in the best way we feel is necessary," she said. “We just hope that the community and beyond will continue to support us and adapt with us going forward.”
