On Monday, Sustainable Orillia’s Youth Council held a ‘March for the Earth’ in downtown Orillia to mark Earth Day and ensure their voices are heard as they seek a sustainable planet for current citizens and future generations.
“What do we want? Climate action! When do we want it? Now!” chanted the participants as they marched from the courtyard at the Orillia Public Library, throughout the downtown, before congregating in front of the Orillia City Centre on Andrew Street.
About 20 people of all ages showed up to participate in the rally, which, including the march, lasted about 40 minutes.
When the group reached city hall, they assembled in a circular formation to represent the earth.
Sustainable Orillia Director David VanAlstyne was among the participants.
“We have to continue to make a sustainable place to live,” VanAlstyne explained of what brought him to the event.
He noted that rallies like the one on Monday can help ensure people think about the choices and decisions they make and think about what they can do to help the community become more sustainable for future generations.
“It’s the youth of today and the next generation who will have to deal with what’s happening today and going forward, ” explained VanAlstyne.
City councillor Jay Fallis participated in the march and spoke at the rally.
“I think we can make a difference and real change if we keep the fight going,” Fallis said, urging people to keep up their vigilance.
During his speech, Fallis encouraged those in attendance to strive to make the community a "better place" for the generation of tomorrow.
Sustainable Orillia officials say they are planning more events and rallies. Details, when available, will be posted on their website.
