Mayor hosts reception for crossing guards

Wednesday is School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Orillia

The City of Orillia showed love to its crossing guards Wednesday during a reception at city hall.

Wednesday was declared by the city to be School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. The guards gathered in Mayor Steve Clarke’s office, where they were individually thanked and received gift bags and refreshments.

“This is just a small way of saying thank you,” Clarke told them. “You folks are a very, very necessary part of our community."

The crossing guards — some of whom have been on the job since 1999 and others who started this month — were also thanked by Insp. Veronica Eaton, commander of Orillia OPP, and by Simcoe County District School Board Trustee Jodi Lloyd, who couldn’t attend the event but provided a statement.
