Maher showed some of his best photos from travelling to more than 80 countries

This month, Canadian photojournalist and PR professional Philip Maher spoke at the Orillia and District Camera Club.

In a really inspiring talk, Maher, from Guelph, showed some of his best photos from travelling to more than 80 countries. Much of his work has been with humanitarian organizations such as World Vision and the World Food Program covering crises, natural disasters and their development projects.

Rather than focusing on images of damage from wars, tsunamis, volcanos and earthquakes he tries to document the people affected by these disasters and how they live. Some images showed the joy of having survived, while others showed the grief and devastation of losing family and possessions.

For each photo, he described the disaster and how to take images that are empathetic and tell a story.

This is one member’s impression of the evening:

“Our speaker last night was awesome. He explains why the shot was taken and what the colours mean in the shot. I believe it takes a certain type of person to do the job he does. His statement ‘hurry up and wait’ is so important in photography. It was a wonderful learning evening for me.”
