On June 19 at 7 p.m. via Zoom, the History Committee at the Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH) hosts Amanda Marino, experience development officer at the Leacock Museum National Historic Site, as guest speaker with her talk, A Leacock Love Story.
Author Stephen Butler Leacock, known as the grandfather of Canadian humour, immortalized Orillia in his book, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town. At one point he was the most famous humorist in the English-speaking world. He didn’t reach his success all on his own.
Join Amanda Marino as she explores the relationship between Stephen Leacock and the women in his life, specifically his wife, Beatrix Hamilton Leacock, with whom a beautiful love story bloomed. Leacock had his cottage, that he called the Old Brewery Bay, constructed as a summer home on Brewery Bay on the shores of Lake Couchiching for his wife, Beatrix. Sadly, she did not live to see it completed.
As the experience development officer at the Leacock Museum, Amanda Marino oversees the museum’s historical collection, exhibits and tours. She is an emerging museum professional who specializes in early-20th-century Canadian social history. She has much Leacock history to share.
