Brookstone Academy, a registered, non-profit private school in Oro-Medonte, announced today that it is accepting students from kindergarten to grade 8 for the 2021-2022 school year.

The school is located in the idyllic countryside of Oro-Medonte at the recently renovated Carley Community Hall – a heritage building that was built in 1912 as a functioning one-room schoolhouse.

With low student to teacher ratios, children attending Brookstone Academy will benefit from the attention of qualified and experienced teachers who are able to support interest-led learning for all types of learners in a small class size environment.

Brookstone Academy’s owner and founder, Shelly Long-Bokma, has a master’s degree in education and over twenty years of experiencing working with the private and public-school boards as a teacher and vice-principal.

Her number one mission is to provide a supportive student-led learning environment that empowers, motivates, and develops the whole child.

“Brookstone Academy is the realization of a life-long dream to create a school that offers all students individualized programming and allows them to feel accepted and supported," says Long-Bokma.

"This type of rich learning environment provides students with the opportunity to truly reach their full potential in a unique and organic way. Our program focuses on helping children find their personal strengths, learn to be themselves, and build confidence to become innovators, creators and leaders in a caring atmosphere of acceptance and trust. I am thrilled to see this innovative program come to fruition and look forward to supporting families in and around our greater community,” says Long-Bokma.

Brookstone Academy offers innovative programming in a multi-age, multi-grade environment and focuses on individualized student learning to meet the needs and interests of each child. The research-based programming prepares students for success in high school and beyond while also developing their own personal interests.

Programming includes:

Experiential, project-based learning – Students discover their interests and passions through open exploration and experiential learning in carefully planned activity centres. Teachers then guide students to delve more deeply into aspects of a subject matter through meaningful project-based inquiries – ensuring a well-rounded education.

Outdoor education – Located in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature, students have regular access to the outdoors for physical and outdoor education, cooperative play and quiet breaks.

Social-emotional skills – Developing social-emotional skills at a young age has been proven to help support greater learning potential in children. Learning skills such as self-awareness and self-regulation is integrated into Brookstone Academy’s daily programming.

Leadership skills – Students learn important leadership skills needed for success in today’s world such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communicating and leading with compassion.

Philanthropy – Students engage in character building projects that address an identified need in the community.

Community partnerships – Working with subject matter experts in the community, students have the opportunity to learn creative skills like painting and music from local artists and musicians.

Brookstone Academy is now accepting registration for September 2021. Space is limited.

To learn more about Brookstone Academy, residents are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021 at 6 p.m. The school is located at 396 Warminster Sideroad in Oro-Medonte.
