Nominations are open for the Orillia Business Women’s Association’s (OBWA) 30th annual Nelle Carter Woman of the Year award.

OBWA president Sharon Van Noort is hoping people will take the time to put names forward for the honour.

“The hard work that women put in on a daily basis with their commitment to the community needs to be recognized,” she said. “They set an example of the achievements that are possible for women.”

Nominees can be from Orillia or surrounding municipalities. Nominators are asked to explain how a nominee “achieves excellence and/or is an innovator in her place of work and is always exploring and implementing better ways to accomplish goals; works as a volunteer to improve our community and contributes to society in her own way; and demonstrates leadership in ideas and new initiatives in her business and/or community volunteerism.”

Essentially, Van Noort said, nominees should be “well-rounded citizens” who set an example.

The OBWA also hands out the Lisa Brooking Young Woman of the Year award to high school students, but they are nominated by people from all three secondary schools in Orillia.

Nominations for Woman of the Year must be submitted by Sept. 1. More information can be found here.

The Woman and Young Woman of the Year will be announced during a virtual ceremony Dec. 8.

Last year, Carolyn-Marie Goodwin and Julianne Pires were named Woman of the Year and Young Woman of the Year, respectively.
