Nominations open for Orillia Woman of the Year award

Orillia Business Women's Association accepting nominations until April 15

The search is on for the next Nelle Carter Woman of the Year.

The award is handed out annually by the Orillia Business Women’s Association (OBWA). This is the 32nd year the group will name a Woman of the Year and the 18th year recognizing someone with a Lisa Brooking Young Woman of the Year award.

The winners will be honoured during a gala. Details about the event are not yet available, but anyone with questions can email [email protected].

“The Woman of the Year award is named for the late Nelle Carter, who was an inspiration to women in our area,” the OBWA explained in a news release, noting Carter was president of her family business, president of the Orillia Quota Club, the first woman elected to Orillia council and was active in St. Paul’s United Church. “The recipient of the award represents Nelle Carter’s high standards and values.”

The winner of the award should be “respected for her outstanding work in the community and beyond, in the workplace, at home or all three, but especially in the community.”

Nominations for Young Woman of the Year are made by staff at Orillia high schools.

Independent citizens from the area vote for the recipients of the Woman of the Year and Young Woman of the Year awards.

Nominees for Woman of the Year can be from Orillia, Oro-Medonte, Ramara, Severn, and Rama First Nation.

A nomination form can be found at orilliabusinesswomen.com. The deadline for nominations is April 15.
