One person has died after a collision turned into a vehicle fire on Highway 400 early this morning.

At about 2:06 a.m., police received a call about a three-vehicle collision on Highway 400 northbound at Essa Road. The collision blocked all northbound lanes. Two of the vehicles caught fire.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two others were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to OPP Const. Lauren Ball, the collision occurred when a disabled vehicle was in the right lane, on a part of the highway where there is no shoulder, and a second vehicle struck it while trying to pass. The third vehicle then struck the first two.

While the highway was closed for a while overnight due to debris, all lanes were re-opened by about 8:30 a.m.

No charges have yet been filed and the investigation is ongoing. More information will be coming, but the police are expecting it will take time to identify the deceased and notify next of kin.
