Ontario confirms 998 new COVID cases today

Public Health Ontario is reporting 998 new cases of COVID-19 today as well as 948 recoveries and 13 deaths. 

The province has reported the deaths of one person between 40 and 59 years old, four people between 60 and 79 years old, and eight people over the age of 80 today. 

Since yesterday, 33 more people were reported hospitalized with the coronavirus and five COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units. 

Based on a breakdown of cases by health unit, 350 of today's cases are from Toronto, 269 are from Peel, 71 are from York Region, 45 are from Ottawa, and 47 are from Halton. 

Of the 998 cases reported by the province's public health agency, 361 individuals are between 20 and 39 years old and 257 individuals are between 40 and 59 years old. 

The province has confirmed 68 new school-related cases today, including at least 37 student cases. There have been 2,543 school-related cases reported to date, and 897 of those were reported in the last 14 days. There is one school closed because of COVID-19. Cases have been confirmed at 580 Ontario schools. 

There were 20 more cases identified in licensed child care settings in today's report. There are currently 22 child care centres closed in Ontario because of COVID-19 cases. 

There are currently 8,358 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario. There are 381 people hospitalized with the virus, including 86 COVID patients in intensive care units and 48 COVID patients on ventilators. 

The province has reported 35,754 tests have been processed since yesterday's report, and another 41,787 tests are awaiting processing. Ontario labs have processed 5.26 million COVID tests over the course of the pandemic. 

Approximately 3.7 per cent of the people tested for COVID-19 test positive, according to the latest provincial positivity rate reported.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 80,690 cases of COVID-19 in the province since the start of the pandemic. Of those cases, 69,137 are reported as recovered and 3,195 people have died. 

In the local region, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,474 cases of COVID-19, with 1,390 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,210 cases listed as recovered. Five people are currently hospitalized. The health unit has recorded 50 deaths.

The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 263 cases per 100,000 people.
