Ontario reports 1,426 new cases of COVID-19 today

Public Health Ontario has again reported a record number of new COVID cases with 1,426 new confirmed cases included in today's update. 

Including today, the past five days have seen the five highest daily case counts ever reported in the province. 

The province's public health agency has also confirmed 15 more deaths, including four people between 60 and 79 years old, and 11 people over the age of 80. Seven of the people who died were residents of long-term care homes. 

There have been 30 people hospitalized with the coronavirus since yesterday and three COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units. 

There were 198 new school-related cases reported today, including 116 students, 21 staff, and 61 unidentified cases. There have been 3,063 school-related cases reported by the province to date, and 1,033 of those cases were reported within the last 14 days. 

Of the 1,426 new cases reported today, 81 are individuals over the age of 80, 173 are individuals between 60 and 79 years old, 408 are individuals between 40 and 59 years old, 536 are individuals between 20 and 39 years old, and 223 are individuals under 19 years old. 

Based on a breakdown of cases by health unit provided by Public Health Ontario, 384 of today's cases are from Toronto, 468 are from Peel, 180 are from York, and 63 are from Durham Region. 

There were 36,707 COVID tests processed since yesterday's report, and there are 34,460 tests awaiting processing. 

According to provincial data, 5.7 per cent of the people tested for COVID-19 test positive. The province's goal, according to the COVID-19 Response Framework, is to keep the positivity rate under three per cent.

There are 10,631 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario currently, and 424 of those cases are hospitalized. There are 88 COVID patients in intensive care units and 57 COVID patients on ventilators. 

Public Health Ontario has now reported 88,209 lab-confirmed COVID cases, 74,303 recoveries and 3,275 deaths.

In the local region, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,560 cases of COVID-19, with 1,478 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,360 cases listed as recovered in the region. Eight people are currently hospitalized, and of those seven are Simcoe County residents. The health unit has recorded 50 deaths.

The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 280 cases per 100,000 people.

There will be no local case update today, as the health unit has closed its offices for Remembrance Day.
